Abstract: A philological analysis of 2 Clement 19–20 in comparison with the style and tendencies of 2 Clement 1–18 reveals in chapters 19–20 significant differences that most likely point to a later author who, intriguingly, seems to correct a central teaching in chapters 1–18 about the necessity that believers engage in a reciprocal relationship with God, their divine patron.
